Protecting Native Plant Ecosystems of South Texas: Agrilife Article
Phase I of the Native Plant Center project is well on its way with the construction of a Visitor Center, the first of three buildings planned for the site on South Padre Island. The original design featured one large building to house all of the plant center programs which is illustrated in the linked report, however the building design was revised to match available funds. "We want to be economically sound and grow the plant center with funds in hand," said Thor Lassen of Ocean Trust. The next phase will focus on landscaping and garden design (see Plant Center Update), and as future funds permit two additional buildings, an educational and plant production center. Ocean Trust Working to Establish a Gulf of Mexico Nature Center
The Gulf of Mexico Nature Center at South Padre Island is an education, research and restoration partnership to sustain natural resources that support coastal communities. The objective of the partnership is to protect and enhance the resiliency of coastal ecosystems that provide habitat for birds, fish and wildlife that inhabit the Gulf of Mexico all of which support our coastal tourism economy.
